From the top of each tower, discover a breathtaking view of the ocean and the city! Surprise effect guaranteed.

A 360-degree view

The towers of La Rochelle - the Tour Saint-Nicolas, the Tour de la Chaîne and the Tour de la Lanterne - are symbols of the port and the city. They have watched over the city for centuries.

Each tower is a different height: 42 meters high for the Tour Saint-Nicolas, 20 meters for the Tour de la Chaîne (it lost its roof in the 17th century following an explosion during the slingshot) and 58 meters for the Tour de la Lanterne (the tallest, which served as a lighthouse until the 16th century).

They are the remains of a vast program of fortifications built by the town in the Middle Ages. They defended the port and the city.

Imagine that each tower housed a captain and his family. They were also home to the garrison and servants.

They embody the last image that sailors take with them when they leave for new horizons.

Did you know that they also served as maritime and military prisons from the 16th to the 19th century?

To enjoy the superb panorama, you'll have to climb many steps! Post your best photos on Instagram and Facebook with the hashtag #LaRochelle.
