A 360-degree view

The towers of La Rochelle - the Tour Saint-Nicolas, the Tour de la Chaîne and the Tour de la Lanterne - are symbols of the port and the city. They have watched over the city for centuries.

Each tower is a different height: 42 meters high for the Tour Saint-Nicolas, 20 meters for the Tour de la Chaîne (it lost its roof in the ^17th century following an explosion during the slingshot) and 58 meters for the Tour de la Lanterne (the tallest, which served as a lighthouse until the 16th century).

They are the remains of a vast program of fortifications built by the town in the Middle Ages. They defended the port and the city.

Imagine that each tower housed a captain and his family. They were also home to the garrison and servants.

They embody the last image that sailors take with them when they leave for new horizons.
