The Saint-Nicolas, La Chaîne and La Lanterne towers today dominate the seafront in La Rochelle. Symbols of the city's maritime past and one-time independence, the towers provide an excellent panorama helping us to understand the urban layout and life of an Atlantic port from the Middle Ages to the present day. The graffiti left by prisoners locked up in the towers brings a human touch to the visit.
